What about the Blue or Grey Boston Terrier Dogs?

Blue Boston Terriers are a unique variant of the Boston Terrier breed, distinguished by their striking blue-gray coat, a stark contrast to the traditional black and white coloring of standard Boston Terriers. Despite their rarity and distinctive appearance, Blue Boston Terriers exhibit many of the same characteristics as their more common counterparts, including their friendly and affectionate nature.

The blue color of Blue Boston Terriers is the result of a recessive gene that alters the production of pigmentation, causing the black pigment in their coat to appear steel-gray or bluish. Due to their unique coat color, it is crucial to use the mildest dog shampoo and conditioners to prevent skin infections and color dilution alopecia, a condition characterized by hair loss associated with dilute coloring in dogs.

Blue Boston Terrier Health

No known medical problems are specifically related to the blue Boston Terriers. Like Boston Terriers in general, they have sensitive digestive systems and they can get some health issues, including cataracts, cherry eye, allergies, deafness, and luxating patellas.

Blue Boston Terrier Color Genetics

So why do some Boston Terriers have blue coats? To answer this question, we need to look at the genetics of coat color in dogs. All dog coats are determined by a combination of two pigments: eumelanin (black) and phaeomelanin (red). Certain genes determine how these pigments are distributed throughout the coat.

This blue coloration in Boston Terriers is caused by a gene mutation which creates a blue coat. This mutation is known as the “blue gene” and is thought to be the result of a spontaneous mutation. It is not known exactly how or why this mutation occurred, but it has been passed on to some Boston Terriers through breeding. The blue coloration in Boston Terriers is caused by a recessive gene. This means that both of the dog’s parents must carry the gene in order for the dog to have a blue coat. If only one parent has the gene, the dog will have the more common black and white coat. If both parents have the gene, it is possible that the pup could be born with a blue coat.

Now you might be wondering: how do Boston Terriers get the dilute gene? That’s a great question! Unfortunately, the answer isn’t entirely clear. Some experts believe the gene was introduced through crossbreeding with other breeds, such as Bulldogs and French Bulldogs. Others believe the gene is a spontaneous mutation that occurred naturally within the breed.

No matter how the gene was introduced, it’s clear that the blue coat color is here to stay. In fact, more and more breeders are beginning to breed for the blue coat color, as many owners find it to be quite attractive.

So if you’re looking for a Boston Terrier with a unique and attractive coat color, a blue one might be just the thing for you! As always, make sure you buy from a responsible and reputable breeder who cares about the health and well-being of their puppies.

We hope this blog post gave you a better understanding of why some Boston Terriers have a blue coat.

I have a little blue pig! He’s 9 weeks old! I had a black and white female several years ago. Franklin is my blue eyed blue Boston and I love him! His Mom is black and white but his Dad is Lilac and white! I didn’t even know they could be other colors than black and white.

My black brindle Sire & red/white Dam just had their first litter of AKC & CKC registered puppies. 2 of the 6 were blues with blue eyes! When advertising for the litter in a variety of ways, the blues were by far the ones I got the most interest in. It was hard to re-home them as I would have loved to keep one. I had never even seen a blue in real life until our litter & I can’t be certain we will ever get more in future litters. I am hoping to get another one in my current Sire & Dam’s last litter & breed one myself eventually.
